Up first, Malabrigo Nube. Slub single spun for my cousin's birthday. So soft and squishy.

Next is more Malabrigo Nube. 2 ply for me! Spun a total of 8 oz. Love, love, love it. I think I already have plans for it. The color is definitely deeper and richer in person. My camera washes it out. Second pic is more accurate.

Additional Details: This handwoven shawl of organic Italian cotton was made for an upcoming art auction. You can find more details about the draft pattern, yarn used, etc. on my Ravelry project page found here.

On an aside ...
I've been (clearly) struggling with regular postings on this blog and I'm not sure how I can move past the irregularity that has become my blogging. I think I struggle with witty things to say. Why I feel I have to be witty? --- well, if you've MET me, you know I love making jokes. Usually as inappropriate as possible. I think when faced with putting it down in writing it's like "GAH! I can't think of anything to say!!!"

So. Methinks I'm going to aim for "less words, more pictures" from here on out. If I feel the need to add details or explanation, I will. Otherwise, just enjoy the view ....

Thanks to my parents and boyfriend and grandma who contributed funds or gift certificates, I was able to afford a new spinning wheel! My friend Sandy at Knitorious cut me a great deal, too! It's a Schacht Ladybug and it's awe-to-the-some. Awesome.

The fiber was Malabrigo Nube in #33 Cereza. It's bulky and lumpy and I love it. I think it's pretty awesome for my first yarn. I got about 70 yards once it was all done. Here is the link to my Ravelry project page about it.

I love weaving random plaids.
Lots of textures.
Lots of fun.

I need to get better pics of the red one. Photos aren't doing it justice! :) The reds and pinks are much more vivid in person. But the other one with blue photographed pretty accurately. Sold that one at a craft show this past weekend! It's surprisingly warm to wear! The open work makes little air pockets when it's all scrunched up around your neck and you will stay WARM! AND it's lightweight! Crazy-town, I know.

Anyway, it's a free download on Ravelry. You should make one, too. Just shamelessly stealing a bit of a silly song* to title my post.

This here is my first woven lace!
....and evidence that I really should press things better before photographing. Ugh.

I made this for a co-worker who retired. Much to early, in my opinion. Not that she cares what I think. Harrumph.

*By the way, I never understood if the song was about a purple people-eater or a purple-people eater. Now YOU want to know, too!

This was a pattern, Ninja Star Shawlette, from the book Seamless Crochet by Kristin Omdahl. This book is genius! No more joining motifs with tons of ends to weave in. These patterns are designed to work back and forth, almost like rows. Plus, she explains HOW it all works so you can designs with your own motifs.
The pattern is a triangular shawl and called for fringe. I left off the fringe. The yarn is Rastita by Malabrigo. Such a soft-n-squishy merino.
First attempt at plaid. I think I nailed it! LOL
I LOVED how this turned out! Was a LOT of fun to weave! Actually, when I pulled it off the loom, I think I actually said "Well, damn..." See, it was soooo pretty that I didn't want to give it up! But, alas, I had created it with a friend in mind, and yes, she did get her cowl for Christmas!
Had a craft show in October. Trying to slowly get a web store up and running. New job keeps me super busy all day so I'm kinda spent when I get home. (Not that I mind.) There are other things that have been woven, but they're super secret until after Christmas. :) You'll see them then. But apparently I have a new favorite thing. LOL I'm kinda obsessed. I think you can see why. Weaving yields such a soft and drapey fabric. More so than knitting or crochet. And it's quite meditative. Once you've warped, it's just swoosh, swoosh, swoosh! Now, I'm not doing anything super fancy. This is just plain weaving. Although I have an AWESOME plaid I can't wait to show you! ...just not until after Christmas. ;)

Ooo...and there's these fingerless mitts, too! In a soft-n-squisy baby alpaca!
... THIS!

This yarn was quite trixy. Not in working with, but in photographing. Or maybe it's my (lack of) photography skill. It's a bit washed out in the photo above. But here ...

... here you can see how rich it really is! Very jewel-like.

The pattern is from designer Sharon Silverman's book Tunisian Crochet: The Look of Knitting with the Ease of Crochet.
The pattern is "Wild and Woolly Wrap" and is just so big and squashy.
It's actually worked on this bias to make a giant quadrilateral-(Yea, math!)-shaped
shawl.
With tassels!
The above pic shows both sides of the shawl. The left side of the photo shows the "right side" of the fabric. Notice how Tunisian simple stitch mimics weaving. The left side of the photo shows the "wrong side" of the fabric. It mimics garter stitch. Looks good from either side!

The original sample in the book was made using a "thin and thick" yarn which I was having trouble locating in a multi-colored yarn that I liked. This yarn was a good alternative. It's Vineyard from Artful Yarns. Unfortunately, this company is now out of business. :(
Here is a quote from the intro to my pattern:

This scarf is a bit of a play on words. If you're any kind of a math nerd (ahem!), you will appreciate the cube pattern of the scarf reflected in the pattern name. If you're not a math nerd....well, just trust that it's funny. The scarf is worked in three basic sections. When looking at the right side (RS) of the fabric, the first section increases along the right edge only. The second section decreases along the left edge and continues increasing along the right. The third section continues decreasing along the left edge only. Once you understand how the increases/decreases work, it's an easily adaptable stitch pattern for a shawlette or stole or shawl!

Because I'm a nerd. That's right. The secret is out. I gave my first "official" crochet pattern a nerdy, mathematical name. Yep. Nerd Alert!

This was a fun pattern to create. I was inspired by a gridded or "cube" stitch from a stitch dictionary. (Do you get the math-y, nerd part yet? It's "cubed"???) But it needed ... something.
As much as I liked the cube-like stitch, it needed to be more than just a repeating grid. So I thought it would look good worked at a fun, funky angle. Again with the math! But don't worry ... this pattern really doesn't involve much math. Seriously, the largest number of stitches worked at one time is seven. Most of us can count to seven.
It's not exactly a special order. My bestie had a request for her birthday ... "this fabric ... with that bag top ... but in black denim ... straps that are long enough, but not too long ..." Well, you get the idea. LOL But it was her birthday gift so that makes is special!

So THIS bag was born:
I love this obnoxious fabric. It's got every color of the rainbow. Which means, it goes with everything in your closet! Ha! So of course, I had to use a rainbow thread! All the seams, all the stitching, all the free-motion embroidery - rainbow!
Ain't she a beaut'? Nice fuchsia lining. A little more rainbow fabric tucked into the handle straps. And of course, the free-motion embroidery on the black twill. This was my second attempt. Not too bad. Need practice. But for the look I was going for - scribble-y and angular - not too bad.
The tab is black twill on the outside and rainbow fabric on the inside. I made a twill "base" for the other side of the snap, to give it some heft and to keep it from pulling too hard on the lining.
As you see, below, I've given the bag a nice, hanging interior pocket. Again, I didn't want the pocket to pull hard on the lining fabric. So I dropped it between the interior "upper band" and the bag lining. That way, when stitching the lining and the exterior together along the bottom of the "upper band", it gets a little more support.

What the heck is a "Happy Crafty Hour" you ask?
Well, it's like a regular Happy Hour ... with a craft!

I prepared a large batch of my turkey chili (the tame version) and a small batch of the wild! It was BYOB and a donation to cover the craft supplies. Hey, we'd need the "B" to get loose enough to have some fun and do some marble painting!

That's right! Marble Painting!
Like you probably did in Kindergarten.
Don't laugh. It's fun!
And produces some very gallery worthy art!
I had done some test art at home, trying out how best to teach this. I don't have any pics of those. Too bad, but I took one to work with me to adorn my new desk. Anyway, this works best with slightly watered down acrylic paint. It lets the marbles roll around better.
We used box lids to contain the marbles and to do our painting in. Just taped down the paper (so the marbles don't roll under the paper), used little cups for mixing and pouring paint, then ... voila! Marble Paintings!
Did I mention that I'm sadistic and I made them practice their color theory for mixing? Yep. I only brought red-yellow-blue-black-white paints. [insert evil laugh here]

But a fun night was had by all!

... even if the threat of tornadoes made us call it an earlier night than planned. Severe storms hit the area, but all were safe. Except me. My cat Erebos had a freak out while trying to put him in the pet carrier so we could head to the basement for safety. He cut my foot good. I had to bleed in the basement for awhile ... then he promptly crawled willingly into the OTHER carrier for a nap once we were back upstairs. The little jerk ...

Anyway, I suggest you try having your OWN Happy Crafty Hour sometime! Make it a potluck! Have special cocktails! Go big! Go small! Just have fun!
I had seen these "tie" bibs around the interwebs before, so I can't take full credit for them. However, I did decide they'd look great on men's shirting fabric. Which I couldn't find. And I didn't have time to go thrifting either. BUT I did find a few nice seersucker fabrics that worked just fine.
They are all cotton with a white cotton flannel backing. Gotta be easy wash since babies just spit up all over them and drop food on them.

I made my own freezer paper stencils. I only had to make two as the wax held up for more than one use. I also wanted a nice wide, fat tie. Several samples I saw on line were too thin for my liking. I kinda also wanted to make bow ties, but stuck with just the regular tie. And I think they're FUN!!!

I used a small piece of velcro on each to secure behind the neck. I made sure the softer, fuzzy side was on the top piece so if it overlapped, it would be softer on the neck than the stiffer, pokey side of the velcro.
So what better thing to have handy for new parents but lots and lots of burp cloths! These are for a co-worker who just welcomed a new baby girl, Isabella. And of course, a new baby girl needs girly burp cloths, yes?
I took my inspiration from Purl Soho's blog, The Purl Bee. I really liked the Oxford Burp Cloths made from soft cotton flannel and Oxford shirting. I just didn't have any shirting fabric handy and couldn't find any that didn't have a "manly" feel to it, so ...
Aren't they pretty?
AND functional!
Plus, these work up pretty quickly.
A tip? Fold the yard of flannel so it's four layers thick and stack the fat-quarters on top. Use a rotary cutter and "square" them all at once. Since the flannel is "shifty", this will ensure that everything is the same size. Next time, I'll use a bigger round object for my corners. I wish the curve was a little more ... curvy.
What does a bride-to-be need for the big day?
A dress, of course. Shoes. Cake. A groom.
All those are kind of "givens", but sometimes the unexpected arises.

And so we have the Emergency Bridal Kit!
... all tucked inside a clutch that can be used for the big day!

Above are the goodies inside the kit: mints, lip balm, hair pins, bandages, a mini-sewing kit, dressmaker's tape and a little "mini" to calm any jittery nerves.

The dressmaker's tape comes in a little tin (far left), but I only included a few strips in the kit just for emergency gapes or slipping shoulders. I had to include a L-A-R-G-E tin of mints because I couldn't find something smaller, but it still fits in the bag.
I made a mini-sewing kit from some simple felt. It includes a few buttons, a sewing needle, some thread and safety pins. Before packaging, I slipped the hair pins onto one of the pages in the sewing kit.
The clutch was done in a silky, textured white exterior. I thought about simple white cotton, but I thought something a little "shinier" would look a little dressier. The bag exterior fabric is interfaced as is the interior fabric. Since the white fabric is a bit sheer, I didn't want any color bleed through of the purple lining. Plus, the interfacing gives the bag more structure.

The bag was pleated before binding the interior seams with fabric. It was a new-to-me binding technique I was trying out. I really liked it. Since the exterior fabric was kind of slippery, it was easier to seam it this way. Plus, the fabric binding helps protect the fabric edges from fraying due to friction. You can see a bit of the seam binding in the pics below.
I made a little side tab for the removable strap. This way the bag can be a wristlet to wear or more of a cosmetics bag to go inside another bag.

Since I made this for a specific bride-to-be, I knew that her favorite color would be best for the lining. AND since I happen to have easy access to the shibori dyer who lives here (hee hee hee) I could get exactly what I wanted for the lining. AND he happens to be the bride-to-be's brother! So it could be a gift from us both!

BTW I love this particular tying method for the shibori. It reminds me of sea urchins or sand dollars.

And I love to wrap presents so here's a shot of the package. I'm a little "Martha" when it comes to gift wrapping. A little extra fold or tuck here or there adds a little extra "oomph". And double-sided tape is a wrapper's best friend. Trust me. Get it. Use it.

Suzanne and I wrapped up our second batch of crochet seminars at the shop today. And let me tell you -- people LOVE crochet! :)

... and I'm really tired.

BUT had the sample completed for our second class set for the end of March. It's also from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller. This is the "In Bloom Bag" - details can be found on my Ravelry Project Page.
So WHAT am I doing posting about NEW stuff?!?!
I'm crazy like that ...

I HAVE been busy BTW. Increase in work hours at primary job. Which meant a cut back in my weekday hours at the LYS ... only to team up with Suzanne to start offering more crochet classes! Insane, I am!

So here are some pics from our "What's Hot! What's New! in Crochet Workshop" that we had at Knitorious. Lots and lots of samples! Whew! What a whirlwind! (And no, we did not just make all these for the workshop. We gathered up our previously made items. Some were new though.)

And let me just say this: crochet is hot, hot, H-O-T!
The response to our workshop was so insane that we had to offer TWO workshops! AND we still had to turn people away! So we'll be doing it again! It's cra-cra! *

Bonus points if you can spot the "massive giant doily rug" I've got going.
SRSLY it's huge. It's for the LYS.

Sigh ... I love seeing all that crochet in one place. It's awesome. I've sort of reinspired to try new things. Like the crocodile stitch! Check it out:

Thanks to Amanda for modeling this cowl/collar/bandit for me! It was a good color for her! This project started out as just a quick swatch for the workshop. Then it HAD to be a thing! Honestly! It wanted to be a finished object so ... it is! I'll try to get pics of the button closure in the back. And maybe write an actual pattern for it. Maybe. (Attention, Trish! If this pic were better, you'd recognize the stitch along the neck band! YOU just finished using it, too! LOL)

SRSLY folks. I must be insane ...
Sad Bunny was a Christmas present for my little buddy, Alex. See, he's too young for the custom crayons I made for his brothers. But a good stuffy is j-u-s-t right for a little fella.AECDesignshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07553779337491215587noreply@blogger.com3
